roncos coach Josh McDaniels announced today that left tackle Ryan Clady, who underwent offseason knee surgery, will start Sunday in the season-opener at Jacksonville. However, starting right tackle Ryan Harris is questionable for the game.

Clady returned to the lineup before Denver's last preseason game. Harris has been hampered with an injury to his left ankle, preventing the Broncos from having both starting tackles at the same time for the majority of the preseason.

"Clady will play. Ryan is getting better every day," McDaniels said this morning. "(I) don't think he's going to be out there today. We're going to take all week and see what happens, but Clady will definitely play. No question."

Meanwhile, McDaniels confirmed he will only activate two quarterbacks for his 45-man roster Sunday, but a third will suit up as the emergency QB.

Rookie Tim Tebow is expected to serve as Kyle Orton's backup, with Brady Quinn as the third-stringer. However, the most recent depth chart has Quinn ahead of Tebow.

"I don't have any plans to activate three guys," McDaniels said. "I think that mostly would take away from the kicking game. (We're) planning on making a decision here shortly (about the backup QB)."

The Denver Post

The rigors of an NFL game day complete, safety Brian Dawkins returns home to his family, eats a healthy meal, stretches his tired muscles and ices any extra-sore spots. He kisses his wife, Connie, and their four children good night, and climbs into his hyperbaric chamber for a full night's sleep.

You didn't think Dawkins, who turns 37 next month, lasted this long in the NFL by chance, did you?

"Age is just a number if you're taking care of your body," Dawkins said.

Yet age could be the defining issue for the 2010 Broncos. It's a balancing act in the NFL, determining when players are in their prime — and when they are past their prime.

In 2009, an aging Broncos defense that was outstanding in helping the team to a 6-0 start wore down as the Broncos collapsed to a 2-8 finish. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, as does his mentor, Bill Belichick, coach of the New England Patriots, favors experience more on defense than offense.

For proof, just look around the locker room at Dove Valley. The bank of lockers separating the defensive players from the offensive players might as well serve as a generational divide.

On one side is the "win now" crowd, a collection of over-30 starting defensive players, guys such as 32-year-old Champ Bailey, 34-year-old Jamal Williams and Dawkins.

"The veterans that we have here are playmakers," Dawkins said. "To me, that's the thing that speaks loudest over anything, your productivity, and we have guys that are being productive at the ages we are."

On the other side is the foundation of the Broncos' future: quarterback Tim Tebow, receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, offensive linemen Zane Beadles and J.D. Walton — all rookies.

"Certainly we're younger right now on offense than we are on defense — I think that shows," McDaniels said.

Will this be a team that will be remembered for its veteran leadership, the play of 30-something defenders in the twilight of their careers, or will those players prove to be past their prime? Will the collection of young players on offense, such as Walton and Tebow, make quick adjustments to the professional game, or will the offense suffer from the growing pains of having too much youth?

Drawing a fine line

While many fans clamored in the offseason for the fresh energy of young Tebow as the starting quarterback, it appears he will be more of a situational player. McDaniels judged in the preseason that Kyle Orton is hitting his prime at 27 and not only will he be the quarterback this season, he received another year on his contract. Tebow, for now, will watch and learn.

"There is a (prime) age at each position, and it is referred to as hitting the wall. The player that has hit the wall is more subject to being injured than the 25-year-old player," said Gil Brandt, former longtime front-office executive with the Dallas Cowboys who now works for NFL.com. "But conversely, if you have too many young players on your team, then your mistakes are often more costly."

The youth versus experience debate is a constant question NFL executives and coaches face, with no clear-cut formula to build a winning franchise. The Indianapolis Colts — the winningest team of the past decade — rely heavily on the draft, mixing new young players with their homegrown veterans. The Patriots, winners of three Super Bowls over the past decade and a record-setting offense in 2007, use free agency to quickly change the face and character of the team.

McDaniels, in his second year, seems to be combining both tactics as he attempts to rebuild the Broncos. In two offseasons, McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders have used 12 of 19 draft picks on offensive players while signing 15 defensive free agents who made either the 2009 or 2010 53-man roster.

"It's a fine line. Experience is so important," Orton said. "But at some point, if you're too experienced, that means you're too old and you've lost a step. So I think it is a fine line where you need young, talented players that are physically so good. You need that. But you also need a nice mixture of veteran leadership."

Each time Orton prepares for a snap, he lines up behind Walton, who, at 23, is set to become the first rookie to start the season at center in Broncos history. The rest of the Broncos' huddle is relatively young too. Only tight end Daniel Graham, who will turn 32 in November, is older than 30.

"Oh, it's different," Orton said. "But I think J.D.'s handling himself right and he's ahead of most rookies in the mental part of the game. We won't know with him or any of those guys until Sunday comes, and that's just the reality of the league. They have worked hard though, and put themselves into a situation where hopefully they can be successful."

Youth offsets injuries

But players and McDaniels are optimistic the youth on the offensive line won't be a liability this season. Sure, offensive line is among the most challenging positions mentally — many rookies, even high draft picks, often take a year or two to hit the field — but the Broncos are hoping that bigger, more athletic and fresher bodies will help the unit be more physical at the line of scrimmage.

The three other young players on the line, right guard Chris Kuper (who is 27) and tackles Ryan Clady (24) and Ryan Harris (25), have been starters since 2008 and can combine the physical benefits of youth with their leadership qualities.

"I think it's always important to have experienced players on your team," McDaniels said. "I think that leadership is really the thing that matters the most, because if you have young players that are good leaders, that's OK too."

It is clear, however, that McDaniels is not afraid of older players. Since McDaniels was hired, he has signed 10 defensive players as free agents who were at least 30 years old, including five who will be starters this season: Dawkins (37 in October), nose tackle Jamal Williams (34), cornerback Andre Goodman (32), safety Renaldo Hill (31) and defensive end Justin Bannan (31).

Add cornerback Bailey, who is 32 and the Broncos' longest-tenured player, and 30-year-old linebacker Mario Haggan, and the Broncos could have the oldest starting defense in the NFL. The youngest starting defender for the Broncos is 25-year-old Robert Ayers at outside linebacker.

"Certainly the leadership and experience we have on defense — that's also a factor for us too — that has definitely played a big role in the maturity of some of the players on our team, because they get to be around those players all day long," McDaniels said. "I think it's a good mix, a good balance."

The Broncos are trying to avoid a repeat of 2009, when their starting defense wilted over the final month. With a roster full of older players, the team beefed up and added depth to the front seven to try to prevent the same thing from happening this season. The team hopes a more aggressive rotation of defensive linemen, with 2009 starting nose tackle Ronald Fields, who turns 29 next week, spelling Williams, for example, will help keep veterans fresher for the long haul.

But injuries will happen — as the Broncos learned throughout training camp — and the issue for the older players will be how fast they can recover. Dawkins, Bailey and 28-year-old linebacker D.J. Williams have missed multiple practices and preseason games.

"If you have too many players that need rest, that need days off, those kind of things, that could be something that could bother you as you go down the road too, because you certainly can't do that and continue to do that all year long," McDaniels said. "I think we're trying to obtain a good balance here."

The Denver Post

For Knowshon Moreno, the challenge is straightforward: How can Denver possibly be the best team in the AFC West if it has the worst starter at running back in the division?

The biggest question mark on the Broncos is Moreno.

Why?

With all due respect to high-mileage veteran Correll Buckhalter and unproven free agent Lance Ball, there really is no Plan B for the Denver rushing attack. With Moreno fighting a hamstring injury that obviously seems much worse than originally advertised, do the Broncos have a leg to stand on when they need tough yardage on third down?

"There's going to be a lot of rust to shake off, but I think I'll be all right," Moreno said Wednesday.

If Moreno is not 100 percent, then the Broncos' ground game might struggle to run at 50 percent efficiency.

Denver has not seen a 1,000- yard rusher since 2006. In the past five NFL seasons, what once was the No. 2 rushing team in the league steadily slipped to No. 18 during the first season Josh McDaniels was on the job as coach.

McDaniels might never regret the divorce with quarterback Jay Cutler for a single second. It was far wiser to trade receiver Brandon Marshall than throw $10 million per year at him. But one gamble this young Broncos coach really needs to pay off is Moreno.

If we held a draft of all the current running backs in the AFC West on the eve of this season, when would Moreno come off the board? Fourth? Or maybe fifth?

Kansas City vows to rock and roll on offense, with veteran acquisition Thomas Jones doing the bruising and young running back Jamaal Charles doing the bolting.

San Diego believes it has landed the steal of this year's draft in Ryan Mathews, a consensus preseason pick to be the league's top offensive rookie.

In his third pro season after signing a $60 million contract with Oakland, Darren McFadden finally needs to prove Raiders owner Al Davis didn't throw that money down a black hole.

On 247 carries as a rookie, Moreno broke runs of more than 20 yards only twice. The Broncos need him to accelerate as more of a game-breaking threat in his second NFL season.

"I think last year, I was just trying not to make mistakes. This year, I think I'm going to go out there and just play and let it all loose," Moreno said.

Hampered by injury, Moreno's alleged improvement at applying his instincts to the speed of the pro game has been little more than a rumor.

"Missing the last month obviously can't help," McDaniels said.

Did the Broncos pick the right man to reinvigorate their running game?

It won't be tough judging Moreno, selected 12th overall in the 2009 NFL draft. It's the same slot where the Chargers took Matthews in the first round this year. Jonathan Stewart, who has rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and scored 20 touchdowns during two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, went No. 13 in 2008.While Tim Tebow figures to be the one player who determines whether McDaniels ultimately succeeds or flops as a coach in Denver, Moreno will play a much bigger role in whether the Broncos make the playoffs this year than Tebow does.

Tebow is the stuff of dreams for the future. Moreno is what matters now.

Former Broncos linebacker Karl Mecklenburg, who brings Ring of Fame credentials to any football discussion, predicts Denver will finish 10-6. His faith is based on watching McDaniels sweep the private agendas from the locker room and stress team before self.

What this Denver team has yet to establish, however, is an identity. How will the Broncos close tight games in the fourth quarter? It is nearly impossible to establish the physical dominance McDaniels craves without demonstrating when 3 yards are required on third down that running the football is every bit as viable an option as throwing it.

"You never know," quarterback Kyle Orton said, "what you have going into the season."

The biggest mystery of all for the Broncos is Moreno.l

The Denver Post

Starters

Kyle Orton, quarterback

Watched as team brought in Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow to push him, then slammed the door on the competition with his work through the offseason and training camp. He's 29-19 as a starter in his career — 8-7 with the Broncos.

* Did you know? In a parking lot surrounded by luxury sedans and SUVs, Orton often drives a hybrid to work.

Knowshon Moreno, running back

The Broncos have big plans for Moreno — they consistently said he had one of their best offseasons — but then he missed all of training camp with a hamstring injury and comes into the regular season as a question mark. He wore down in 2009, averaging 3.6 yards or less per carry over the last four games of the season.

* Did you know? He led NFL rookies in rushing last season with 947 yards.

Daniel Graham, tight end

Missed some time in the preseason with a torso injury — he took a hard hit in the preseason opener at Cincinnati — but his combination of receiving and blocking skills are important in the Broncos' offense.

* Did you know? Graham has caught from 28 to 38 passes in all but two of his previous NFL seasons.

Jabar Gaffney, wide receiver

Has never led a team in receiving in his NFL career, and 2009 was his first season with more than 50 receptions. He closed out the preseason looking like the Broncos' No. 1 guy on the outside.

* Did you know? His father, Derrick, played wide receiver for eight seasons for the New York Jets.

Brandon Lloyd, wide receiver

He has had great camps in other places but hasn't started more than five games in a season since 2006 and hasn't caught more than 26 passes in a season since 2005. The Broncos believe he can be a productive late bloomer in their offense.

* Did you know? He was once a summer intern at Fox Sports Midwest.

Eddie Royal, wide receiver

Royal plummeted to 37 catches last season after having 91 as a rookie in 2008. The Broncos have said they are going to make a concerted effort to get him the ball more this time around. Will play in the slot much of the time.

* Did you know? Had five plays of at least 50 yards in 2008; had two plays of at least 50 yards in 2009.

Ryan Clady, left tackle

Ask personnel executives in the league to rank the Broncos' players, and Clady often comes out on top. Quick feet, big reach and plays with intellect — all top-shelf attributes for a top-shelf left tackle. Coming off his first Pro Bowl selection in 2009.

* Did you know? He started his career at Boise State under coach Dan Hawkins as a defensive lineman.

Zane Beadles, left guard

Beadles played his entire collegiate career for Utah at tackle and spent plenty of time there for the Broncos as well in the team's offseason workouts. Moved inside at the start of training camp and held the starting job all the way.

* Did you know? His mother, Jamie, played basketball at the University of Wyoming.

J.D. Walton, center

Walton ended what had been a competition at center fairly early on in the team's offseason work. He started all 36 of his games at Baylor after transferring from Arizona State and was a finalist last season for the Rimington Trophy as nation's top center.

* Did you know? Baylor coaches said he surrendered only two sacks in 431 pass plays in 2009.

Chris Kuper, right guard

Signed to an extension during this offseason and already is a mainstay up front with 42 career starts in his four previous years — 31 at right guard, 11 at left guard. Now in his third season on the right side.

* Did you know? Kuper and former Broncos guard Mark Schlereth were born in Anchorage, Alaska.

Ryan Harris, right tackle

Started only eight games in 2009 because of a toe injury that eventually required surgery. There were times in camp when Harris, in his third year as a starter, was the only lineman with the No. 1 offense who had started a game for the Broncos.

* Did you know? A native of St. Paul, Minn., Harris once said he aspired to be the state's governor.

Matt Prater, kicker

A power kicker who did not get his first chance to be a frontline guy until Mike Shanahan signed him in 2008. Prater has seven field goals of at least 50 yards in his two seasons as Broncos kicker — five in 2008 and two last season.

* Did you know? He routinely makes field goals of longer than 60 yards in practice.
Reserves

RB Lance Ball: Made the most of increased playing time in practices and preseason games with all of the injuries at tailback.

OT-G D'Anthony Batiste: One of the strongest players on the team, he was forced into the starting lineup during the preseason by Ryan Clady's knee injury.

RB Andre Brown: Fourth-round pick by Giants in the 2009 draft, spent rookie season on injured reserve when he tore left Achilles tendon. Has had turf toe issues too.

RB Correll Buckhalter: Missed virtually all preseason with a neck and back injury he suffered on the first day of training camp.

G Chris Clark: Went to training camp with the Bucs in 2008, but spent the last two seasons on Vikings' practice squad.

G Stanley Daniels: Signed with the Broncos as a free agent. Was on the Packers' and Jets' practice squads and went to a training camp with the Rams in 2009.

WR Eric Decker: Was on track to be as high as a second-round draft pick until he suffered a foot injury during his senior season at Minnesota. Was selected twice in the Major League Baseball entry draft.

TE Dan Gronkowski: The Broncos see Gronkowski in a receiving role. He had one catch in 2009 — his rookie year — in limited duty.

G-C Russ Hochstein: Coming off knee surgery, versatile player has plenty of experience in the offense from time with Patriots.

FB Spencer Larsen: Moved from linebacker entirely this time around and is the only true fullback on Denver's roster to go with a full plate of special-teams work.

G-C Eric Olsen: Rookie offensive lineman made starts at guard and center during his Notre Dame career, and the sixth-round draft pick has worked at both positions in his first year with the Broncos.

LS Lonie Paxton: Veteran long snapper was one of coach Josh McDaniels' first targets in free agency in 2009 and has now snapped in 157 regular-season games to go with 14 playoff games, a postseason total that includes three Super Bowls.

QB Brady Quinn: Former first-round draft pick from Notre Dame is looking to regain his form after three seasons that included nine confidence-crushing starts for the Browns.

TE Richard Quinn: For many, he will always be the 2009 second-rounder who had only 12 catches in his entire collegiate career and had no catches as an NFL rookie.

QB Tim Tebow: Already one of the most popular players in the NFL, but looking to refine mechanics enough to eventually become a starter.

WR Demaryius Thomas: Suffered a foot injury Aug. 7 and missed the rest of the preseason. Will have to make the adjustment from a triple-option offense to pro style.

WR Matthew Willis: Former track star played only two seasons of college football before trying to start an NFL career.
The Denver Post

Starters

Ryan McBean, defensive end

McBean is the only returning defensive starter up front as he has held off the Broncos' additions at the position, including free-agent signee Jarvis Green. McBean is the Broncos' choice to play on early, predominantly run downs.

* Did you know? He was born in Jamaica.

Jamal Williams, nose tackle

Was a primary target in Denver's offseason maneuvering. The Broncos likely would have had more competition for him in the open market, but Williams wanted to play for Denver defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely, his former position coach in San Diego.

* Did you know? Only the legendary Junior Seau played more games on defense for the Chargers than Williams did.

Justin Bannan, defensive end

Has been a rotation player for much of his NFL career. Has started more than two games in a season only twice in his previous eight years in the league. The Broncos are looking for more from the CU product.

* Did you know? Bannan won an award while playing for the Buffs as the player who made the greatest team contribution with the least amount of recognition.

Robert Ayers, outside linebacker

A former collegiate defensive end, he showed improvement in camp in recent weeks. But the Broncos hope he can take a huge leap, especially since he may get some playing time at Elvis Dumervil's rush linebacker slot. Ayers did not have a sack for Denver last season despite playing plenty on passing downs.

* Did you know? He has done some mixed martial arts training in the offseason.

Mario Haggan, inside linebacker

Started training camp on the inside, but was moved to the outside when Elvis Dumervil suffered his chest injury. After two preseason games he was moved back inside to play the middle linebacker position, which is where he is expected to stay for the regular season.

* Did you know? Haggan started 16 games last year after starting none in his first six seasons in the league.

D.J. Williams, inside linebacker

Missed most of training camp with an undisclosed injury — he had shoulder and knee surgeries in the past — but is expected to be ready for the Sept. 12 opener. Played all three linebacker spots when the Broncos had a 4-3 scheme. Now settled into the "Jack" linebacker spot in the 3-4.

* Did you know? Arrived at Miami as a fullback, switched to linebacker as a sophomore.

Jarvis Moss, outside linebacker

Moss will share time with Jason Hunter and will get plenty of opportunities to show whether he can generate the kind of pass rush the Broncos were hoping for when they selected him in the first round of the 2007 draft, 17th overall. He has only 3 1/2 sacks in three seasons combined.

* Did you know? Moss started just 13 games at the University of Florida.

Champ Bailey, left cornerback

Nine-time Pro Bowl selection will be asked to take on the opponent's best wide receivers, no matter where they line up. He remains one of the best open-field tacklers at his position in NFL history.

* Did you know? After 18 interceptions in his first two years with the Broncos, he has had seven in the last three years combined.

Renaldo Hill, safety

If someone needs help getting lined up on a particular play or after a presnap shift, this is the guy they're usually looking to. A savvy veteran who started his career as a cornerback, has found his calling at safety.

* Did you know? He needs two more starts for 100 in his NFL career.

Brian Dawkins, safety

The kind of player coach Josh McDaniels said he covets on the field and in the locker room. Dawkins earned his eighth Pro Bowl trip in the 2009 season and has played long enough to have intercepted passes from since-retired quarterbacks Craig Erickson and Jeff Hostetler.

* Did you know? 2009 was one of only four seasons in his career when he did not have at least half a sack.

Andre Goodman, right cornerback

Others have bigger resumes and more Pro Bowl trips, but this guy led the Broncos in interceptions last year. In the NFL, only Charles Woodson, Asante Samuel and Darrelle Revis have more interceptions over the last two seasons than Goodman's 10.

* Did you know? Goodman has participated in the NFL's business management and entrepreneurial program at Harvard.

Britton Colquitt, punter

Spent much of last season out of the league before signing with Miami's practice squad in December. Was signed by the Broncos a week later and was retained this offseason. The 2010 season will be his first as a starter.

* Did you know? His father (Craig), brother (Dustin) and cousin (Jimmy) all punted for the Tennessee Vols and in the NFL.
Reserves

S David Bruton: Great straight-line speed and one of Denver's most effective special- teams players, especially in punt coverage.

CB Perrish Cox: Some teams were scared off by character questions before the draft, but the Oklahoma State alum already is Champ Bailey's top backup and is expected to play the "nickel" more as the season progresses.

NT Ronald Fields: Started all 16 games for Denver in 2009 but got pushed down the depth chart when Jamal Williams signed.

LB Jason Hunter: A late pickup — after his release by the Lions — made the most of his time, showing he could play up from a two-point stance and rush from a three- point stance when the Broncos need that.

CB-S Nate Jones: Swiss Army knife of a player will be playing at cornerback, safety, in the nickel and on special teams.

LB Joe Mays: Denver shipped tailback J.J. Arrington to the Eagles to acquire Mays, a quality career special-teams player.

S Darcel McBath: Played in 13 games as a rookie in 2009 and is Brian Dawkins' primary backup, though he finished training camp with a forearm injury.

DE Le Kevin Smith: Had a no-frills training camp and preseason, but did enough to hold his roster spot in place of Jarvis Green, one of the Broncos' big free-agent signings. Figures to be a rotation player.

DE-NT Marcus Thomas: Mike Shanahan holdover became a needed swing player who can fill in at all three spots up front.

CB Syd'Quan Thompson: Started 52 games in college. That experience showed as he played safety and corner in the preseason. Consistently in the right spot and made some big plays in the return game as well.

CB Cassius Vaughn: Undrafted rookie made his mark on special teams — he may have been the Broncos' best coverage player during the preseason — and handled himself well when he played on defense.

LB Wesley Woodyard: Speed is his top attribute, to go with his willingness to stick his nose in the action. That's why he is one of Denver's best special-teams players.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Standing before reporters in the Broncos' Dove Valley locker room on Wednesday, Knowshon Moreno pondered a question he's answered many times since the end of last season.

The second-year running back didn't have think long about how he's changed since the 2009 season finale. Even after missing all four preseason contests due to injury, Moreno said lessons learned as a rookie and his hard work this offseason still have him miles ahead of where he was at this point last season.
Days before the regular season opener in Jacksonville, Moreno made it clear that confidence isn't going anywhere.

"I think last year I was just trying not to make mistakes -- more just trying to do everything right," Moreno said. "This year I think I'm just going to go out there and play and let it all loose."
Now Moreno, who dressed but did not play in Thursday's preseason finale in Minnesota, is just ready to show what that attitude can do.

Moreno and several of his veteran teammates hope to get back onto the field for Sunday's opener after missing time in the preseason. Heading into the regular season opener, the Broncos are looking healthier than they've been at any point since the beginning of training camp.

The team has launched into preparations for the Jaguars with many familiar faces back in the practice huddle. For a squad looking to start a new season off on the right foot, that's an exciting prospect.

"For those of us who have been out, we're getting used to being back out there with the rest of the guys on offense," said Daniel Graham, who recently returned to practice after missing the final three preseason games. "Practice has been good so far, and we'll be ready on Sunday."

It's not certain who all will be ready to go against Jacksonville. Correll Buckhalter and Ryan Clady boosted the offense when they made their preseason debuts against the Vikings. Players such as Graham, Demaryius Thomas and Champ Bailey have made returns to the practice field after missing the final preseason games.

The prospect of those returns excites Kyle Orton heading into the start of his second season as the Broncos starting quarterback, especially that of his Pro Bowl lineman Clady -- who stepped right back in to his familiar role protecting Orton's left side in the preseason finale.

After a successful preseason leading the first-team offfense, the quarterback said if the training staff decides guys are ready to take the field, he's confident that they can get the job done.
Other players echoed that sentiment about the team's improving health. But Robert Ayers cautioned against letting those proven playmakers take on too much responsibility as they get back onto the field.

The linebacker, who registered a team-high 2.5 sacks in the preseason, said other players stepping up to take some of the pressure off those players will be the key to a quality regular season debut. On what is expected to be a hot, humid day in the Sunshine State, the Broncos will need plenty of players ready to go.

"You can't really describe how good it's going to be," Ayers said. "With that being said, everybody else still has to do their job. We can't just rely on those guys. We have to bring our hard hats and be ready to hit and ready to play."

Players such as Moreno just hope to add to that effort.
The running back, who finished 2009 with 947 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns, returned to the practice field last week. He said he's getting back into a groove, developing a comfort level with some of the new offensive linemen and getting his body back up to speed.

"I think that out there yesterday in practice he's getting back into the flow and hopefully the next three days will be the same thing," Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. "I think the overall speed and rhythm of the game has really slowed down for him (compared to last year)."

With Buckhalter, Lance Ball and new addition Andre Brown also options to run the ball against the Jaguars, Moreno said he's feeling no pressure to take an unnecessary workload in the backfield right away.

Right now, the Georgia product just wants to take his first hand off and get his 2010 season started.
"I just want to get back out there," Moreno said. "Basically, that's what it all really comes down to -- get back out there, get my wind back. I want to get out there and see how the game is flowing and make the best of it."

HOMECOMING FOR TEBOW
Tim Tebow has long looked forward to his first NFL regular season game. The fact that Sunday's regular season opener at Jacksonville is in his hometown just makes it a little more sweet.
The rookie said he's not sure quite what to expect from his debut.
Tebow knows locals are excited. In a Tuesday morning conference call, Jaguar running back Maurice Jones-Drew showed the young quarterback respect, referring to Jacksonville as "his town." But the former Heisman winner at the nearby University of Florida said he'll be too focused on getting ready for the game to pay too close attention to the hoopla.

Tebow knows he'll be in uniform on the Broncos sideline as his new squad kicks off its season against his hometown team, but it's still undecided whether he will play or what his role might be in Sunday's game.
All Tebow is sure of is that Sunday will be a memorable day no matter what.
"There might be one or two No. 15 jerseys there, probably a few Gator fans as well," Tebow said, "but it's just going to be exciting overall for me."

The game also represents a chance to go home for three other Broncos from the Jacksonville area -- Brian Dawkins, Jabar Gaffney and Marcus Thomas. But Tebow is the only one who gets the added thrill of it being his first regular season contest.
As he gears up for the big weekend, Tebow thanked his family for helping take some of the pressure off. They've taken the job of coordinating tickets for all his family and friends, leaving him to do what he does best: concentrate on football.

"My family is great and so supportive and they kind of handle all that on their own," Tebow said. "I really haven't worried about it too much. My family is kind of just taking care of all that for me, so I'm just focused on practice today."

Mike Klis, The Denver Post

The Broncos added big-play potential to their offense Tuesday.

Demaryius Thomas returned to practice.

But there's no way the rookie receiver can play Sunday in the season opener at Jacksonville, is there?

"I think I'll be ready," Thomas said.

The first of the Broncos' two first-round draft picks (some guy named Tim was the other), Thomas has missed most of the offseason and all of the preseason with a left foot injury.

Expect the rookie receiver who has a rare blend of size (6-foot-3, 229 pounds) and downfield speed to be listed as questionable on the Broncos' injury report later in the week.

There is physically recovering from the foot injury, then there is mentally trusting the foot won't give out as Thomas is about to cut, stop, plant and take off.

"That's the hard part right there," he said.

The (hardly) secret of Tebow.

Imagine the energy jolt the Broncos will get each time quarterback Tim Tebow steps into the huddle, especially in the opener Sunday in the rookie's hometown of Jacksonville.

That's one of many reasons Tebow is expected to be the Broncos' backup quarterback to Kyle Orton this year, with veteran Brady Quinn serving as the emergency No. 3 quarterback.

Another reason is Tebow appeared to slightly outplay Quinn in the preseason.

Yet, because the opener is his only chance to do so, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels wants to create doubt among the Jacksonville coaches.

"We're not going to name one right now," McDaniels said when asked about his No. 2 quarterback.

Footnotes.

Wear orange and blue Friday. Slim a kid. Something like that. The Broncos and 31 other NFL teams are encouraging fans to wear their team colors Friday in support of the league and United Way's goal of ending childhood obesity. Schools that sign up for the "Back to Football Friday" program, which encourages kids to participate in school and after-school activities, can win prizes. . . .

Who says McDaniels is partial to Patriots? Two days after releasing former New England defensive end Jarvis Green, the Broncos released another in Le Kevin Smith to make room for the signing of veteran defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson. . . .

Speaking of former Pats, tight end Daniel Graham returned to practice Tuesday after missing the final three preseason games with bruised ribs. Cornerback Andre Goodman also returned to practice after missing the final preseason game. . . .

Four players were missing from practice Tuesday. It figures that two of them were running backs. Recently signed Andre Brown (turf toe) and Lance Ball (attending grandmother's funeral) joined right tackle Ryan Harris (sprained left ankle) and backup safety Darcel McBath (left forearm) in the trainer's room. Rookie Zane Beadles is expected to start in Harris' place Sunday against Jacksonville.

If only this were about nothing more than solving a second-grade math problem.

To NFL players, this is not about how the league counts to 20. It's about the process of getting there.

League owners and commissioner Roger Goodell, who have never played in an NFL game, want to shift the 20-game season from the current 16-game regular season, four-game preseason model to 18 games in the regular season and two in the preseason.

"Hell, no," Broncos defensive end Justin Bannan said.

"No! With an exclamation point," said safety Brian Dawkins, the Broncos' union representative.

For the most part, NFL fans are with management on this one. They want more regular-season games. No one likes preseason games.

The players, though, see two more regular-season games as two too many because of the enormous physical toll the game takes on their bodies.

During the preseason, established starters typically play about five quarters' worth of snaps, spread out over four games. And the intensity of play doesn't come close to regular-season levels.

"The physical pounding, the wear and tear on the bodies is far greater in regular-season games," Dawkins said. "It's not an even game switch."

About the only players in favor of expanding the regular season are rookies and second-year players. Veterans who have experienced the grind of a 16-game season can't comprehend two more regular-season games, plus the playoffs.

"People have no clue what your body feels like after a football season," Bannan said. "I think you need to cut two preseason games out and still have a 16-game schedule."

That proposal would never happen. The NFL is all about making more money, not less. The expanded regular season is about increasing the television and radio rights fees. The networks in turn will charge more for commercials. The sponsors will increase the price of goods. And, no doubt, ticket prices would go up.

In the end, guess who would pay for the expanded schedule? The players feel they would, with little in return.

"Plus, for those guys who make teams in those third or fourth preseason games, they're not going to be able to show what they can do," Dawkins said. "To me, there are too many negatives. It's not an even swap."

Work pays off for Broncos wide receiver Matt Willis

Even for a guy known for his speed, this was a little ridiculous. When the time came for Matt Willis to make his pitch to play football, all he got was 30 seconds.

Willis was a track standout at UCLA in the spring of 2005 with an itch to join the football team when he ran into Bruins football coach Karl Dorrell in a hallway. So what if it had been five years since Willis had last worn a helmet, or caught a pass? Willis knew this was his best shot.

"Football was something I always loved doing. I got that bug and I knew that if I didn't take the opportunity to play, later on in life it would be something that I regret," Willis said. "I said to (Dorrell), 'Do you have two minutes I can talk to you real quick?' He looked at his watch and said, 'I've got 30 seconds.' So I thought right away that it was an uphill battle."

Yet it was one that eventually paid off.

It might appear to Broncos and NFL fans that Willis has come out of nowhere to make the Broncos' 53-man roster as one of the team's six wide receivers. But the 6-foot, 190-pound Willis has been on a long, at times frustrating, journey to the NFL. At age 26, a decade after he quit high school football because at barely 5 feet tall and 100 pounds he was too small to play, he's finally on an opening-day roster.

"I really like what we've seen out of him, and I'm very happy for him, too, that he's made it, that he's created a role for himself on our team," Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said.

And it all started with that half-minute conversation in a UCLA hallway.

Willis was convincing enough for Dorrell to send him to talk to an assistant coach, who set up an unofficial tryout after a spring practice. UCLA's coaches already knew Willis could run — he was on a track scholarship and excelled at the 400-meter hurdles, but they wanted to see if Willis could catch. Willis snared a few balls, and just like that, his track career was over and his football career was beginning.

Willis gave up his track scholarship to become a football walk-on, with his mom, Lynn, paying tuition.

"I gave it all up just for the opportunity to play football," Willis said. "At the time, it was a really hard decision. It was very stressful because it wasn't just me, it was my mom, and now she has to pay for school. It was a very tough family decision."

He played sparingly that first fall in 2005, spending more time watching and learning from then-UCLA assistant coach Eric Bieniemy, a former University of Colorado star. As a senior in 2006, he started three games and caught three touchdown passes.

It was hardly a resume NFL scouts drool over, yet Willis found a spot in the Baltimore Ravens' training camp in 2007, and played in five games that season after signing as an undrafted free agent. He was released by the Ravens in September 2008, signed to the Broncos' practice squad three months later, and spent the first 16 weeks last season as a practice squad player.

"It stinks, because everyone wants to play. So practicing all week, being around the guys and then not being able to play, that's the worst part," Willis said of his practice squad tenure. "It's a good opportunity, though, and a good way to keep your foot in the door. You just have to try not to get down about it."

He made the active roster for the final game last season when Brandon Marshall was benched, and started against Kansas City but did not make a catch.

Willis made an impression on his Broncos coaches and teammates throughout the season. This last offseason, Willis finished in the top two in voting by teammates for workout awards, McDaniels said, and then he wowed onlookers with a consistently impressive training camp.

He caught 13 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown in four preseason games — an average of 20.2 yards per catch — to secure his roster spot.

"He's kind of the epitome of the good that can come from hard work and putting a player on a practice squad and developing him. He never got discouraged — all he did was work harder," McDaniels said. "Obviously he made a lot of plays in the preseason, he shows up in the kicking game. He'll play in a lot of situations on Sunday, I would imagine."

Talking 'bout Willis

Thousands of fans who attended training camp at Dove Valley saw Matt Willis make impressive catch after impressive catch. Coaches noticed too. Willis made an opening-day 53-man roster for the first time in his career:

Position: Wide receiver

Height: 6-0

Weight: 190

College: Two seasons at UCLA

NFL experience: Played in five games for the Baltimore Ravens in 2007. Started the 2009 season finale for the Broncos. Was on the Ravens' and Broncos' practice squads in 2008 and 2009.

These have been bad predictions:

"Ours has been the first, and doubtless, the last visit to this profitless locality (the Grand Canyon)." — 1861

"A rocket will never leave Earth's atmosphere." — 1936

"Rock 'n' roll will be gone by June." — 1955

"World inflation is over." — 1959

"Computers aren't for home use." — 1977

"The Broncos will have a 5-11 record." — 2009

Of these predictions we can be certain: The Broncos start the 2010 season on Sunday and end it in 2011.

Broncos at Jaguars: The prediction is 90 degrees with isolated thunderstorms. On a cool October day in Denver, the game would be a deadbolt lock for the Broncos. Not at this time or this place, however. The Jaguars are wild-card contenders. There are questions about both teams' starting running backs — Knowshon Moreno and Maurice Jones-Drew. Maurice definitely will play. On the other side, Don'tknowshon. And who knows about the Broncos' offensive line and the outside linebackers? No Immaculate Deflection for the opener, no Brandon Marshall and Brandon Stokley, at all.

Jax 24, Broncos 16.

Seahawks at Broncos: A lot of people are picking the Seahawks to win the NFC West. A lot of people are wrong. Pete Carroll had better (and better-paid?) teams at USC.

Broncos 23, Seadogs 9.

Colts at Broncos: Including this year, the Colts' six-year record in exhibitions is 4-22. In the past seven regular seasons, the Colts' record was 89-23. Which matters? Peyton Manning has averaged just more than 30 points a game against the Broncos in nine games.

Colts 30, Broncos 17.

Broncos at Titans: From best quarterback to best running back. Broncos and Titans evenly matched, except this game isn't out of the country. It's country.

Titans 21, Broncos 20.

Broncos at Ravens: The Broncos' most hideous game on the road in 2009 was at Baltimore. The Broncos' most hideous game on the road in 2010 will be at Baltimore. Same teams, same score.

Ravens 30, Broncos 7.

Jets at Broncos: Hello, Darrelle Revis. The Jets have become the NFL darlings because of their late run last year, Rex Ryan and "Hard Knocks." But the Broncos saved their quality games at home last year for New England and the other New York team, and the Jets have offensive issues too.

Broncos 17, Jets 13.

Raiders at Broncos: The Raiders' defense will be superior to the Broncos' defense. But, surely, the Broncos will not lose three straight at home to the Raiders.

Broncos 20, Raiders 17.

Broncos vs. 49ers at London: The Broncos got lucky this game was scheduled across the pond, not next to the Bay. However, the 49ers will play the previous Sunday at Carolina, then fly to London and practice there all week — and should become more acclimated. The Broncos aren't leaving until later in the week (getting in the bulk of their work at home) and will practice at a cricket field. This is a sticky wicket. Wembley Stadium is a mess at that time of the year, requiring longer cleats.

49ers 24, Broncos 20.

Chiefs at Broncos: Remember 44-24? The Chiefs still can run, but can't hide.

Broncos 34, Chiefs 14.

Broncos at Chargers: The Chargers remember 34-23 at San Diego.

Chargers 34, Broncos 13.

Rams at Broncos: The Rams have a rookie at quarterback, a terrible offensive line, an awful defensive line and a new owner you may have heard of.

Broncos 31, Rams 10.

Broncos at Chiefs: One of those December games in Kansas City when the weather is terrible and the Broncos are too.

Chiefs 28, Broncos 16.

Broncos at Cardinals: The Broncos catch a break playing indoors in December in Arizona with Kurt Warner retired and the Cardinals just tired.

Broncos 20, Cardinals 17 (OT).

Broncos at Raiders: Three consecutive games on the road. Not a break.

Raiders 27, Broncos 17.

Texans at Broncos: Gary Kubiak's first, and last, appearance in Denver as a head coach. Matt Leinart may be playing quarterback for Houston by then.

Broncos 27, Texans 21.

Chargers at Broncos: BRONCOS WIN! The Chargers already will have clinched the division title before Jan. 2, and the Broncos will have been eliminated from the playoffs. So what? Tim Tebow will be starting at quarterback.

Broncos 31, Chargers 21.

Broncos record: 8 -8

Division winners: AFC: Chargers, Patriots, Bengals, Colts; NFC: Cowboys, Packers, Saints, 49ers.

Wild cards: AFC: Jets, Steelers; NFC: Vikings, Giants.

Super Bowl: Cowboys over Colts.

These will be good predictions:

Grand Canyon National Park will attract 5 million visitors this year; the space shuttle Discovery will be launched again in early November; inflation is on the rise again; soon there will be 2 billion home computers in the world; rock 'n' roll is forever; and the Broncos will finish 8-8 for the third season in a row.
